Potatoes New Brunswick is the result of several Royal Commissions and studies on the potato industry. The organization was created by federal and provincial legislation, and came into being in 1979 as the New Brunswick Potato Agency. PNB operates from offices in Grand Falls, New Brunswick. Potatoes New Brunswick also operates a grower owned disease testing laboratory and research facility in Fredericton New Brunswick, Agricultural Certification Services and an Elite Seed Farm in Bon Accord.
Direction is provided by a Board of Directors consisting of 9 growers-directors elected from 5 provincial districts. PNB’s Board is controlled by growers and also includes regular attendance by representatives from the New Brunswick Potato Shippers` Association, the New Brunswick Seed Potato Growers Association and the New Brunswick Seed Potato Export Corporation.
Potatoes New Brunswick has many very active committees, which provide support and advice to the board. Most of the members of these committees are growers who are not board members. We also have committees which include federal and provincial government experts and researchers.
The potato industry alone, through primary, secondary and induced activities (the “potato cluster”) generates about $1.3 billion dollars for New Brunswick’s economy every year.
